The role of transformers in data centers

Data centers in India are set to grow three-fold between 2021 and 2025.

India currently has around 126 data centers and 28 more are set to be added over the next 3-5 years. Major players in data center business are expecting year-on-year growth of 20% in FY21.

While data centers play a strategic role in powering Indian as well as global IT sector, the elements that occupy a key position in powering data centers are current and voltage transformers. Transformers ensure that the electrical distribution systems of these facilities stay in optimum level of operations. From high-voltage utility substation side to medium voltage switchgears and low voltage distribution switchboards, transformers are ubiquitous and critical in functioning of data centers.

The role of transformers in data centers

The electrical system design of the data center is determined by the size and capacity of the data center. Metering of power consumed by the DC can be done at high, medium, as well as low voltage points.

High-voltage transformers

In case of larger data centers, the high-voltage utility grid is directly connected to the substation that supplies power to the data center. The transformers at the substation then step the high voltage down to level of primary medium voltage distribution.

Medium voltage transformers

Power consumption can also be measured at the point of medium voltage switchgear. Continuity of operations at the DC is ensured by putting in place built-in redundancies of the electrical distribution system, at the medium voltage distribution systems as well as at the incoming utility connections.

Low voltage transformers

Low-voltage transformers are also used widely in data centers to avail of several advantages. Deploying a transformers below 2500 kVA reduces short circuit currents and enables the use of simple pole circuit breakers for the main switchboard. By deploying low voltage CTs, short circuit current in the IT distribution network is optimized. These transformers enable the rack feeder breaker to be sized using a mechanism called selectively-enhanced-by-cascading between the rack feeder breakers. In this setup, the upstream breaker aids the smaller breaker in breaking the fault current and reinforces its breaking capacity. All this while, selectivity is ensured continuously between both breakers.

For metering, voltage and load current meters as well as power measurement meters are connected to low voltage potential transformers and current transformers. The desired level of accuracy in metering determines the selection of transformers for metering purpose.

Durable and high-performing split core transformers in data centers make a significant difference to costs. Split core current transformers from Newtek come with nylon casing Newtek split core current transformers come with a nylon casing which makes them resistant to damage from fire as well as protects them from fall.

Besides features such as ease of installation and compatibility with retrofit applications, our split core CTs have a high range between 100A to 5000A. They do not need any kind of electronic calibration or signal processing to function. Key innovations in production process allow Newtek to provide you with quality transformers in the shortest possible lead time. Explore more about the special features of Newtek transformers here

Challenges in operating transformers

Cost and durability are often the two greatest challenges in operating CTs and PTs. Difficulties in installation, damage from fall or low manufacturing quality drastically reduces the service life and performance of transformers, and in turn affect operations of the data center itself. Newtek Electricals has been working for 10+ years to resolve these very issues. Innovations in production process of transformers allow us to drastically reduce the manufacturing time of CTs and PTs. We help businesses reduce downtime and save costs by supplying standardized high-quality transformers in shortest possible lead time.
